General Description

of Post

“Nurture, Believe, Achieve”

Supporting children and staff members during the busy lunch hour. Acting as a role model to children and involving them of constructive play activities throughout the lunch hour.


Greenvale Infant and Nursery School are seeking to appoint two Lunchtime Play Leaders to join the team in our happy and thriving school. The successful post holders will need to:

·         Have recent experience of working with children within a play environment.

·         Be enthusiastic and self-motivated

·         Be patient and caring

·         Be a good team player who enjoys the company of children

·         Show consistency and fairness to all children

·         Have a positive attitude

·         Be highly skilled, adaptable and flexible

·         Have the ability and skills to deal with a range of behaviours well in a positive manner

·         Understand the importance of confidentiality, committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.


As a minimum we ask for applicants to be have recent experience with working with children, preferably supporting children with play.


Any offer or appointment is subject to receiving a clear enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.



School Background

Greenvale Infant and Nursery School is a two-form entry school from Nursery through to Year 2.   The school is well established in the local area and is an all-inclusive school.


In 2017, Ofsted graded the school as ‘Good’ in all areas, highlighting the following areas within their report:

·         Leaders are passionately committed to ensuring that every pupil at this caring and inclusive school reaches their potential.

·         Leaders strive to constantly improve the school. Teachers and support staff benefit from effective training and development.

·         Teachers know their pupils well. There is a clear focus on helping pupils acquire basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics. Most groups of pupils are making good progress.

·         The curriculum is rich and varied. It provides pupils with an exciting range of opportunities to acquire knowledge and skills to develop their spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding.

·         Pupils are polite and well behaved around the school.

·         Pupils are well cared for and they feel safe and happy in school because there is a wide range of support and highly skilled staff.

·         Children get off to a good start in the Early Years and make good progress across all areas of the curriculum.



Key Responsibilities

In addition to all the above statements, the following must also be undertaken:


Be vigilant of the children’s safety at all times and to report any Safeguarding concerns to the Designated Safeguarding Officer


To reward children for good behaviour by praising and rewarding children with stickers.


To demonstrate a calm and caring attitude towards all children, being firm but fair, no raised voices.  


To play with the children and to supervise the children’s games.


To be vigilant in the playground and observe playground rules:-

·         Ensure the playground and equipment is safe for the use and report and concerns to the Senior Midday Meals Supervisor and the school office.

·         All gates are shut.

·         All exit points watched.

·         No child to leave school without permission.

·         Check unknown adults who arrive in the playground with the Head Teacher, member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) or school office.

·         To assist children with any problems / concerns.


When speaking to the children remember to call them by their own name.


As we are role models for children we should remember to speak to each other in the appropriate manner, including using good manners.


Ensure reasonable conduct and behaviour of the children, maintaining good order and discipline in accordance with the school’s Behaviour policy.


Any inappropriate behaviour should be reported to the class teacher at the end of lunch in a discreet way remembering to state what actions were taken.  


Do not leave the playground until the children have been collected and the playground has been cleared of equipment.


When it is necessary, wet play will take place:-

·         Each classroom should have a wet play box stocked by the class teacher. If not a box then use your discretion on what to get out avoiding computer water and sand.

·         Read stories and play games, keeping the children occupied during the lunch break.

·         Ensure that the noise level remains low.

·         Leave the classroom tidy at the end of the lunch break.



Other Responsibilities

In addition to the all the above statements, the following must also be undertaken:


Do not take any belongings on to the playground, or hang in the corridor; they must remain in the staffroom/locker. Mobile phones must remain in school.


Confidentiality is to be upheld and maintained at all times; if you have any concerns or issues refer immediately to the Senior Midday Meals Supervisor who will investigate with the relevant member of staff / parents.


To work under the direction of the Senior Midday Meals Supervisor, who will be monitoring the lunchtime organisation, and who will report any concerns to the Head Teacher or member of the SLT in the absence of the Head Teacher.


To attend INSET (in service training) where the Head Teacher deems it necessary to carry out the job of Lunchtime Play Leader


Person Specification

Please note the following areas that are appropriate for this post:





Play Leader qualification or equivalent



Minimum Grade C GCSE in English and Mathematics



Skills & Attributes

A good level of written and spoken English



Ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions



Ability to organise and prioritise work



Ability to remain confident yet discreet in dealing with visitors, parents and students



Be aware of child safeguarding arrangements
